Oscars 2013

It's been many months since my last post. I've been extremely busy with a big project and blogging has escaped me. The only thing that could possibly pull me back is....the Oscars! I wait all year for this event and I couldn't miss stating all of my opinions about it. First of all, let's talk about the red carpet:

Kristin Chenoweth. Gag. I felt like I spent the entire two hours leading up to the Oscars listening to her ramble on about how small she is. We get it, you're 4'11. You said that. AND you took your shoes of twice. And you dissed Adele (who has way more talent than you do) by telling her how petite you are and taking off your shoes. I thought I was hallucinating when she asked Hugh Jackman, "what do you think weighs more, me or an Oscar?"

Moving on.

Unlike the past years, I'm only going to talk about two dresses this year: best dressed and worst dressed. My pick for best? Amy Adams. Hands down. She looked fabulous!

That dress is to die for! I wish I could just wear it around my apartment while I'm vacuuming. I love her.

And now for the worst. What do you get when you combing 90's teen movie fashion with Tiffany's? Anne Hathaway:

I'll say, I thought her hair looked lovely, but this dress is all wrong. The light pink...the satin...the high neck WITH the necklace- ahh! She looks like she fell out of "She's All That" -I mean where are the platform sandals?

That being said, she totally deserved the Oscar, her performance in Les Mis was amazing.

Onto the host: Seth Macfarlene. Hilarious! I laughed the entire time. LOVED the boob song. And the way he introduced Meryl was so funny, I couldn't stop laughing. I know he's been getting some bad press.....but they did predict that, no?


Hands down, this has to be one of the best awards shows I've ever seen. I'm a sucker for musical theater and loved the throwback to Chicago (though I did think it was totally random). Who didn't love/find really inappropriate the Jaws music playing over top of the acceptance speeches?

Awesome moment: Jennifer Lawrence falling. She was so sweet and funny and I loved her brief speech. She's quickly becoming a new favorite of mine.

Weird moment: Michelle Obama? What are you doing there? What are you trying to say? ....no really....why are you here?

I didn't stay up to see Chenoweth's performance....I had had enough of her. Other than a few minor things (Jack Nicholson in sunglasses the entire night...again!) I thought this had to be one of the best Oscar shows ever. Except for maybe when Ellen hosted.

The SAGs

I was going to do a whole review of the show and the fashion like I did with the Globes, but I've been too busy at work to write a long post and, frankly, the SAGs were so lacking this year that there's not much to say about them anyways. The highlights?

Lea Michele wore another silver dress, but this one looked good!

More on fashion: just a repeat of the globes. Lot's of pretty strapless dresses, but nothing very thrilling. I did like the lack on two-toned dresses at this event! And Angelina went back to her usual all black ensemble, as to be expected.


They obviously tried to move the show along quickly, which was nice, and I was very surprised that The Help took home so many awards! The movie was good but it wasn't that good.

And, once again, who was the most annoying person in attendance? Sofia Vergara everyone! I don't watch "Modern Family" but you can bet that I'm certainly not going to start watching now. Thank god she won't be attending the Oscars...I hope! Here's her interview where she talks about how people don't pay enough attention to her butt. Gag.



That's enough about the SAG Awards. They just weren't that memorable this year. That's ok, the Oscars are only 26 days away! I'm so excited! I need to start planning my Hors d'oeuvres!

The Globes

Award season is here! It's my favorite time of year.....on television, that is. And there's so much to recap! There are a lot of surprising movies nominated, and so many on my list to see! I don't know how I'll ever be able to have the time (or finances) to see them all! Still on my list:

The Artist

I tried to go see The Artist two weeks ago but there was such a long line to get into the theater that I just decided to wait until the buzz died....although apparently that won't be happening any time soon. The problem is in New York each movie costs $13...and if you add that up I could potentially spend over $100 on movies. Not likely to happen!

Of course we were all looking forward to seeing Ricky Gervais once again pick on Hollywood's darlings, but he seemed much more toned down this year, other than his jabs at Kim Kardashian which were really pretty funny...and horribly true. Ya, he's a funny guy, but he wasn't outrageous this year. Perhaps he wasn't given enough time?

I was pretty surprised that Moneyball had so many nominations. I mean it's a zero to hero sports flick. How many of these have we seen?? I'm so bored. And why was My Week With Marilyn nominated in the comedy or musical category? Did anyone find that movie funny? I thought it was fantastically sad and Michelle Williams totally deserved best actress. And of course Meryl Streep had a nomination, and I'm so glad she won! She must be one of the best, if not the best, actresses of all time. But enough of this, lets get to the really important stuff: fashion.

Now is it just me or were there a lot of really blah dresses? Dresses that were pretty but with not too much flavor. Reese Witherspoon, Natalie Portman, and even Angeline Jolie were all members of this category. Strapless dresses that were nice. But that's really all you can say about them. Yes all three of them looked stunning but that's mostly because they are all, well, stunning. Rooney Mara's dress was also a safe choice. Black. Black pony tail. Blah. There were also a lot of two-toned dresses which I really didn't like, unlike my good friend H. I mean, what's with one color on top one on the bottom? Thumbs down. Unlike past years, nothing really stood out to me as "wow" but there were a few that I liked more than others. These included:

Jessica Alba


I know this kind of fits in with the "boring strapless" category but I loved the color on her and the beading is beautiful. And could her chest get any sexier? That must have taken hours of airbrush tanning and make up!

Charlize Theron


This is one of my favorites with an exception. If the bow wasn't there I think this would be my favorite dress of the night. It's a great color, she didn't play it too safe, and I love the glittery headband, but I'm a sucker for anything that sparkles. The shoes are perfect and I love the slit. I just wish it didn't have that giant bow!

Nicole Richie


This screams classic Hollywood to me. She looks perfect. I don't know if anyone anywhere has ever looked that good in bangs and I love the shimmery silver.

Evan Rachel Wood


I have to choose this as my number one. The deep green looks fantastic with her fair skin. I like the shape much better than the usual mermaid dress and look at the detail!

I also want to comment that though I found her dress to be a boring strapless, Julianne Moore's emerald colored earrings and ring looked great on her:



And who were the worst dressed? Oh dear...

Zooey Deschanel


Here we go with the two-toned dresses. What is going on here? I really don't like her hair- did anyone else notice those winged sideburns she had going? Too much black eyeliner. Not one thing about this look is good. It's really too bad because I like her a lot and she's so pretty. She could have done much better. And tuxedo nails to the golden globes? This isn't the Grammy's!

Jessica Biel


I know she's just recently become engaged to Justin, but that's no reason to slip into her great-grandmother's wedding dress. I like white lace, but her hair color is disastrous with this dress and on her. All this dress did was add the somewhat shocking appearance of a third boob hanging limply over her belt. If she lost the sleeves, went back to dirty blond, and tightened the top this look might have been ok.

Sarah Michelle Gellar


It's almost a blah strapless...except that it's so busy and exacerbating that I want to squeeze my eyes shut. "My daughter picked it out" is not an excuse. You had the dress in your room to begin with. Shame on you. This looks like a wedding dress that accidentally fell into a pool of blue dye. And with a pony tail?

There are a few dresses that I can't make up my mind about.

Madonna


The more I look at this dress the more I like it, but I'm not sure why. It's two-toned, though I have a soft spot for green and silver, and I felt like she could have worn a size up in the chest. Come on Madonna, haven't you been showing too much as it is lately? I'm a Madonna fan, and I officially want to go see WE but she seemed just a tad cocky for me last night.

Tina Fey


Who doesn't love Tina Fey? I also like this dress, and I think the color is very nice on her. I'm just not sure this dress is her. She looks a bit awkward in it, no?
Claire Danes


Claire Danes is the perfect image of grace. Do I like this dress? Yes and no. She looks very elegant. I like the back. I think it would have been better as either solid black or solid white. But there I go again hating on the multi-colored dresses.


And what happened to the Glee girls? I think these dresses were just a bit too....confusing:

Lea Michele


I like silver. I like "peek-a-boo" lace. I don't like this dress. I can't even say why. There's just too much going on.

Dianna Agron

The tiered lace, the little bird-like things by her shoulders, the see-through-ness....I don't like any of it. Good color on her though.

And the most annoying guest of the night? I name Sofia Vergara a winner!



Yes, her hair looked like silk, the color of her dress was lovely (although to me it also falls into the nice strapless catergory), and she is clearly one of the most beautiful attendees but her awards speech combined with the interviews she gave just drove me crazy. A little too cocky I'd say. Although you could argue she has a reason to be.

Well that about wraps up the Globes. I can't wait for the Oscar nominations to come out in two weeks. I just hope the host is a bit more entertaining, the fashion more captivating, and some of the attendees a little less...annoying.

My Oscar Favorites

So of course I watched the Oscars yesterday from start to finish and loved every minute of it. There were a few moments that I found a little uncomfortable, and some wins I didn't agree with, but that's true of every year. Lets start with arguably the most important part of the Oscars: fashion. Here are my top picks:

#1: Jennifer Lawrence
Her dress was so simple but it fit her beautifully. I'm a big fan of simple dresses and she looked just flawless. The only thing wrong with her? It kind of irks me that she was in Winter's Bone. My college professor's friend wrote this film and as students we had to use it for scene studies. We all hated it terribly and dubbed it "Winter's Boner." Ironic that it was nominated for best picture....



#2: Amy Adams
I'm a huge fan of Amy Adams. I think she's a terrific actress. No, I did not see The Fighter, but I loved this dress! The blue brought out her eyes and I'm a huge fan of sequins. At first I thought the necklace was too much, but overall, I really loved this look. You didn't see any other blues of this color on the carpet either.


#3: Halle Berry
I mean come on, does this girl ever NOT look good? No. This dress was the essence of Oscar glamor and she looked flawless. There's really no need for other words.


#4: Hillary Swank
I loved this dress! Usually, I'm not a fan of feathers, but this was really elegant and very "Oscar night."




#5: Celine Dion
Although this was a really simple dress, she looked really stunning. I would kill for that hair! The dress was also very age appropriate.


#6: Scarlett Johansson
I'm not sure this really qualifies as an Oscar dress but I really liked it, especially the opening in the back.


#7: Sandra Bullock
This is a classic Oscar dress and I thought she looked really good, though I would have liked to see er wearing a more dramatic earring or necklace.


#7: Mila Kunis
Once again, not sure if it is really an Oscar dress but I loved it! The lavender is really unique and the lace is so feminine. I wasn't expecting to see her in something so soft.



Honorable mentions:

Reese Witherspoon. I loved her hair and earrings, but I thought her dress was a bit bland.

Michelle Williams: The nude color looked really good on her and I loved the sparkles, but I wasn't so crazy about the high neck, which made too many appearances, I think.

Anne Hathaway. She looked really good in the red dress she arrived in, and I'm going to consider that her official Oscar dress despite the 8 costume changes, all of which I loved.

Jennifer Hudson. She looks terrific! The red looked great on her and she seemed really happy. I wasn't a huge fan of the cleavage though.


And now onto the bad. My opinion seems to be clashing with celebrity fashion police on some of these but I just cant figure them out. Here are my top picks for worst dressed:

#1: Nicole Kidman
It pains me to say this because I like Nicole Kidman, but what was going on with this dress? It washes her out and is unflattering. I don't like the red shoe with it, I don't like the hair, and I don't like the little man tagging along behind her. I'm disappointed, Nicole.




#2: Cate Blanchett
Lots of people seem to like this dress. I can't understand why. Ok, the color is good....but what's with the big circle on the chest? And the yellow on the back with the cut off cape-looking thing?



#3: Florence Welch
Remember those dresses your mom used to make you wear when you were five that itched and zipped up the back so you couldn't get them off yourself and you were claustrophobic and couldn't breath and your skin turned red??? That's what this is. But worse.


#4: Marisa Tomei
Ok. This just looks like a cat got a hold of one side of the dress and tore it to shreds but she decided to wear it to the Oscars anyways.

#5: Gweneth Paltrow
I know a lot of you won't agree with me on this, but I think this dress sucked. What is with the rectangular neckline? She looks like she was trying to promote an upcoming film which takes place in a future in which women dress really badly. I will admit I like the silvery color, but the design totally turned me off. And her hair. And her awful performance which was painful to watch much less listen to.


Honorable Mentions:

Mandy Moore. I liked the dress until the camera panned down and the glitter ended. It was just weird.

Penelope Cruz. She always looks fabulous! So then why did she look like she was going to the prom? I'm not going to say anything about her cleavage being too much because I know she just had a baby. And I guess I just said her cleavage was too much.



An interesting year for Oscar fashion that's for sure. A lot of red and a lot of high necklines. I thought Anne Hathaway did a good job hosting. I really liked her even though some people are complaining that she was a bit over-the-top. I mean come on people, she had to do something to counteract the weirdness that is James Franco, right? Speaking of which, he's a weirdo. I'm not sure what else I can say about that. You know who really freaked me out? This guy:


I literally had to put down my cheese and cracker.

Now, onto the awards. Yay for Natalie Portman and Collin Firth! Both totally deserving. I'm really happy that The Social Network didn't win for best picture and that it was The King's Speech. While I thought that Black Swan and Inception would have been better picks, I still enjoyed The King's Speech and thought it was well done. I was happy that Inception won best visual effects, but thought it was also deserving of best score; Hans Zimmer is a genius.

Going back to The Social Network: can someone tell my why this movie was so special? I can't believe it beat out Black Swan for best editing, nor that it won best picture at the Golden Globes. Besides the fact that the film is incredibly relevant, I honestly can't remember one thing that I thought was outstanding about the film.

Inception was an interesting choice for best cinematography; I would have liked to see Black Swan win, or even The King's Speech, but I am happy Inception picked up some awards; it was definitely deserving.
